Far from the Madding Crowd: Tap Mun

E-mail Print PDF

placetapmunThe late 17th or early 18th century Tin Hau temple sits proud and vibrant at the north end of the island's twin villages. This traditional temple dedicated to the Goddess of the Sea is in excellent repair owing to a number of well-funded renovations over the years. Take an easy walk up to the lookout and get back to your youth flying a kite in the cool breezes of one of Hong Kong's few, prime kite-flying locations. Or sit and watch the resident egrets and other water-birds in the small mangrove-rimmed cove below. Enjoy spectacular views of Mirs Bay, Sharp Peak and mainland China.
A path leads east of the villages from the temple to the windblown expanses of this two square kilometre island that is a favourite day retreat for Sai Kung residents and visitors alike. Well-defined trails wind through these areas to the north and south, past stunning ocean scenery.

Tap Mun's twin villages, strung along the south-western shore, are home to the majority of the island's approximate 100 residents. Hakka and Tanka fishermen's homes rise on stilts above the water and small shops selling anything from kites to dried oysters line the main drag.  At the New Hon Kee seafood restaurant, Tap Mun's only and justifiably famous eatery run by the Lam family, you can have a leisurely lunch before hopping on the ferry for the half-hour return ride back to the crowd.

Getting There

Take either the 94 or 96R (Sunday or holidays only) KMB bus to Wong Shek Pier and hop on a ferry from there. Go to our Transport Info pages for more detailed information.

Further Information:
